The 33-year-old contract has not been resolved, although recent reports claiming that he is leaning towards staying, and his existing contract is about to expire in just over two months.
Messi is currently raising a staggering € 75million (£ 65.4million) a year at the Camp Nou, and Barca knows they will not be able to continue paying for the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner after a coronavirus outbreak.
According to ESPN, Barca President Laporta, therefore, is ready to offer Messi a two-year fixed-term agreement by choosing another term, and any immediate reduction in salary will be compensated for some years ago.
Although their financial situation is not stable, the report adds also that Laporta is still hoping to bring in either Erling Haaland or Neymar to the club to reassure Messi about his Barcelona project.
Neymar is also thought to be willing to take a salary to secure a return to Barcelona, although Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are still considering a move for Leo Messi.
