Leo Messi wanted to leave Camp Nou last summer after requesting a transfer but ended up staying behind after Barcelona demanded that his £ 625m release clause be met before anything could happen.
According to Catalan television network TV3, newly elected Barca president Joan Laporta and Lionel’s father, Jorge Messi, had dinner together last week and had positive discussions about the future of Leo Messi.
Barcelona are set to offer the 33-year-old new contract a 10-year contract that includes two more seasons as a player in charge of Spanish giants, as well as a future move to Major League Soccer and a senior role at Camp Nou when he retires.
Although Barca have debts of more than £ 1bn, they are hopeful that they will be able to offer Messi a new contract before his current contract expires in June.
Leo Messi scored his 26th La League goal of the season on Thursday night, however, Barcelona missed the chance to climb to the top of the table as they lost 2-1 at home to Granada, leaving 2 points behind Atletico Madrid at the point table.
