There was confusion at Parc des Princes, including Leo Messi himself, when Mauricio Pochettino decided to oust Argentina in the 75th minute of Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 win over Lyon.

At the time, PSG were playing a 1-1 draw with their home rivals, which came as a surprise that they would be releasing their summer signings.

After the game, Pochettino explained why he and his coaching staff had made that decision.

“We have decided to remove Leo Messi due to possible injuries in the future,” he said.

“We have important games ahead and we have to protect him.

“These are decisions that the team makes and everyone knows that we have a lot of good players. We have to make those decisions.

“Sometimes they can be looked good, sometimes they are less.”
