La Liga president Javier Tebas has made it clear that FC Barcelona would have been able to catch the club’s legendary Leo Messi this summer if Barca had not signed the likes of Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.
The Argentine captain has been forced to leave Camp Nou with his club unable to renew his current contract for the 2021/22 season, following financial mismanagement that resulted in La Liga earning a solid salary.
Barça were given the opportunity by La Liga to sell 10% of their business to CVC Capital Partners, but Barca president Laporta rejected the offer, saying it would jeopardize the club’s future.
The deal may have allowed them to sign Leo Messi again, but La Liga president Tebas has suggested to COPE that Barça could renew his Argentine contract anyway – if Laporta had not signed Aguero and Depay in the summer transfer window.
