The Argentina captain Lionel Messi has confirmed to Barcelona fans that he plans to return to Camp Nou sometime down the line.
Lionel Messi left the club surprisingly last summer, and Barcelona’s financial problems made the contract impossible and forced the Argentine to move to Paris Saint-Germain.
The idea of returning to Barcelona has never been released, however, as Barca President Joan Laporta recently admitted he may be interested in bringing back both Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta to work with new manager Xavi.
“I always said that sometime I would return to Barcelona because it is my home and because I will stay there,” he told Marca. “And obviously if I could contribute to the club I would love to come back.”
Interestingly, Lionel Messi’s first thought, when asked about returning to Barcelona, came back as a player, although he declined to reveal whether that was possible.
It was then suggested to Leo Messi that there could be other reasons for his departure than just financial problems, but the striker was not in a position to listen to such speculations.
“I don’t know if I left too late,” he continued. “What they told me was that they could not revive me and I could not stay.
“You don’t have to look for other cases to try to see what happened. I’ll stick to what they told me and that’s it.”
Lionel Messi also admitted he was upset with Barcelona struggling. His former team is seventh in La Liga, with six points remaining in the top four and ten behind leaders Real Madrid, while facing a real battle to qualify for their Champions League team.
“Yeah, obviously [it annoys me]. I always want the best for Barcelona,” he said. “I’m a fan even though I don’t play right now. And I have colleagues and friends within the team. I want them to do well.
“Obviously there are a lot of points lost in the league, but there is still a lot to play and I have no doubt Barcelona will be back on the table.”
