Real Madrid missed an eight-point lead over LaLiga Santander on Sunday night as they were level on points with Cadiz at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Sevilla’s victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday closed the gap to five points, although Los Blancos managed to bounce back from six despite losing points for the first time in eight home games.
Cadiz ended the night without firing on four defenders, a number that was reduced by the 36 Real Madrid goal-scoring efforts.
The athletes were doing well from start to finish and looked set to annoy their visitors from the start as Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior tried to beat them early.
Opportunities came and went, first for Vinicius, then for Fed Valverde, and later for Ferland Mendy, but the idea that a goal would eventually come.
Carlo Ancelotti found himself frustrated with Cadiz’s time-wasting tactics from the start of the first half, but the Andalusians’ gameplan went unpunished and they managed to get under the skin of Los Blancos.
The second part continued with the same lines. Eden Hazard found himself frustrated, as did Toni Kroos and Luke Jovic instead.
David Alaba had a long chance to close the gap with a free-kick, but his attempt failed to hit the wall and Kroos’ next volley was soft.
LaLiga Santander leaders resumed work on Wednesday when they visited San Mames to face Athletic Club.
