Steven Gerrard will miss the next two Aston Villa Premier League games after being tested for COVID-19, the club has announced.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will not be able to stay at home against Chelsea on Sunday or on Tuesday’s trip to Leeds United.

The club’s statement on Twitter read: “Aston Villa can confirm that coach Steven Gerrard will not be able to attend our next two Premier League games against Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be separated after being tested Positive for COVID-19.”

The English football pyramid system has been plagued by an increase in coronavirus infections affecting clubs at all levels.

The Aston Villa clash with the Blues is one of the remaining 6 games of the top flight of the regular Boxing Day program, although their previous encounter with Burnley has been postponed due to high levels of infection in the team.

Their trip to Elland Road is already in jeopardy as Leeds sees their match against Liverpool suspended due to the COVID outbreak associated with a growing injury problem.
