Manchester City are nearing the end of a deal to sign River Plate star Julian Alvarez, and the 21-year-old will join the Premier League champions who will rule next summer.
River Plate is set to retain Alvarez’s services until June when City are ready to pay a 21 million striker release clause.
Napoli, Nice, Fiorentina, and Atalanta were among a number of clubs seeking to sign Alvarez, but Man City’s offer has created an urgent meeting on the River.
The Eleven Talent Group approached the River via Hernan Reguera, who has a good relationship with Nahuel Hidalgo. The company represents Sergio Aguero and therefore has a strong relationship with Man City.
The transfer will allow River to keep Alvarez for at least until June, with the option of staying until October if the team is in contention to win the Copa Libertadores.
Manchester City have no problem with any possible delays, as they still refer to Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund and Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur.
What impact could Alvarez have?
Manchester City played without a striker all season, but that did not stop them from advancing to the Premier League.
Alvarez will make Man City even more nervous about his consistent goal-scoring prowess, having scored 20 goals in Argentina’s 35 games of the Primera Division in the 2021 season on his way to River to win the title.
He was sacked by Real Madrid in his youth but was unable to join Los Blancos due to a law that barred the Spanish club from signing foreign players under the age of 13.
