Roman Abramovich has received more than 300 statements of interest since he decided to sell Chelsea, although it is believed that only 10 of those are loyal buyers.
Abramovich said the club was being sold as the UK government continued to impose sanctions on individuals and businesses over allegations that they were linked to Vladimir Putin following Russia’s attack on Ukraine – former Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov was among those punished so far.
The interest of several clubs in the club is well known. Turkish businessman Muhsin Bayrak said he would agree to a deal on Friday and Hansjorg Wyss and Todd Boehly wanted another consortium.
However, according to ESPN, this does not in any way hurt Chelsea’s interest. They report that since Abramovich announced his sale, Raine Group – the bank that owns the sale – has received hundreds of options, though not all of the proposals are realistic.
RedBird Capital Partners, a private organization led by Manhattan-based Gerry Cardinale – currently with an 11% stake in Liverpool – is said to be bidding. Michael Rubin, the owner of sports behemoth Fanatics, is interested.
The report also revealed that there are a number of other co-operatives and individuals who may also be involved in the program but who have yet to identify themselves.
Initial reports indicated that Abramovich wanted to improve on his sales this weekend as he was determined to get rid of the club as soon as possible.
