Chelsea have issued an official response to the news that owner Roman Abramovich’s assets have been frozen by the British government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier on Thursday, it was announced that Abramovich was one of the richest Russians in the United Kingdom who had been sanctioned by the government, meaning his sale of the group had been suspended.

Chelsea have been granted a special license from the government to continue operating, but they will not be able to make transfers of players while sanctions exist, and they will not be able to sell merchandise or tickets for the foreseeable future.

A few hours after the news broke, the team released the response.

“Chelsea Football Club has been told that its owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government,” read a statement released on the club’s official website.

“Because of his 100% ownership of Chelsea FC plc and affiliated organizations, Chelsea FC will often be under a similar regime to Mr. Abramovich. However, the UK Government has issued a standard license that allows Chelsea FC to continue certain activities.

“We will be completing our men’s and women’s team games today against Norwich and West Ham, respectively, and intend to engage in negotiations with the UK Government regarding the scope of the license.

“We will also seek guidance from the UK Government on the impact of these measures on the Chelsea Foundation and its significant role in our communities.

“The team will update further if necessary.”

Thomas Tuchel’s men’s team will face Norwich City in the Premier League on Thursday night, while the women’s team is also in West Ham in the Women’s Super League.
