Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has warned Erik ten Hag not to join Manchester United because they are ‘not a football club’.
Manchester United have negotiated with Ten Hag over a new manager and are considering offering him a place at the Old Trafford dugout that Van Gaal calls his own between 2014 and 2016.
Van Gaal’s time at Manchester United is not greatly missed by fans, despite his success in the 2015/16 FA Cup final – his last game before he was suddenly sacked by Jose Mourinho.
Now in charge of the Dutch national team, Van Gaal said taking on United’s job would not benefit Ten Hag.
“Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that is always good for Manchester United,” he told a news conference. “But Manchester United are a commercial club, so the choice of a coach is difficult. He has to go to a football club.”
Van Gaal continued: “I will not tell him what to do. He can call me. Sometimes we talk to each other. But he should choose a football club and not a commercial club.”
Ten Hag is one of United’s key points aimed at dominating the first team this summer near Mauricio Pochettino, who is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after a difficult season that will yet see the Ligue 1 title.
