Manchester United have opened talks with both Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag for a full-time manager at the club, a reliable source said.

Current coach Ralf Rangnick has been temporarily appointed until the end of the season and is expected to play a key role in deciding who will replace him.

Manchester United football director John Murtough confirmed this week during a quarterly call to investors that the search for a new manager has begun and according to Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, the two leading players have already heard.

‘Now, with the shortlist created, contact is made with the relevant consultants to determine the potential interest and costs,’ Whitwell said.

“Manchester United are also expected to meet with the candidates and it is believed that they will work on the decision in the next few weeks.

‘They do not want to wait until the summer to be appointed as they would like the newcomer to be fully involved in building the squad for next season and beyond.

‘The interviews were held with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag. It is believed that there is a dialogue about other managers as well.

“As with player transfers, United are expected to follow a variety of options before acquiring one popular candidate.”

The reporter then explained that a shortlist comprising Ernesto Valverde, Rudi Garcia, and Lucien Favre drew a temporary position was eventually given to Rangnick. He says none of this will be considered.

“That was a set situation and Man United now wants a junior manager to lead the club for several years,” he said, suggesting that 63-year-old Rangnick would not be considered permanent.

‘It is said that a good finish would strengthen his hand to give advice,’ said the reporter, adding that the German was not on the shortlist.

‘[His] status at the club could be influenced by the results on the pitch for the remaining three months of the season. ‘

Whitwell cites club sources who believe Pochettino could be the target, although he admits possible compensation to PSG could be a factor.
