Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that his son has died in childbirth, and the Manchester United midfielder says it was only the birth of the twin that gave him and his partner, Georgina Rodríguez, the power to “live at this time”.

Cristiano Ronaldo  was posted the news on Instagram on Monday evening. “It is with great sadness that we announce that our baby boy has died,” the statement said. “It’s the worst thing that can happen to a parent. Only the birth of our daughter can give us the strength to live a life of hope and happiness.

“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their professional care and support. We are all devastated by this loss and kindly ask for privacy in this very difficult time. Our baby boy, he is our angel. We will always love you. ”

In October Ronaldo said that he and Rodríguez were expecting twins, the Portuguese having four children, two of whom were twins. “We are pleased to announce that we are expecting twins,” the statement said at the time. “Our hearts are full of love – we can’t wait to meet you.” Rodriguez once said how much his father Ronaldo loved. “Every day by your side is fun and special,” she said on Instagram. “We love you forever. Thank you so much to the best dad in the world. ”

Manchester United travel to Anfield on Tuesday to play Liverpool in the Premier League. Whether the striker will feel ready to make himself available in the game remains unclear. Responding to Ronaldo’s news, United posted a message on Twitter. It read: “Your pain is our pain, @Cristiano Sends love and strength to you and your family at this time.”

Ronaldo returned to United in August for the second season playing for the club from 2003 to 2009. He is United’s leading scorer this season, with his hat-trick in a 3-2 win over Norwich City on Saturday bringing his total to 21 goals in all competitions.

It was the 60th hat-trick in a Portuguese career, where he scored 807 goals in total and was named five times Fifa World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or winner. Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times and won league titles with United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.
