João Félix and Luis Suárez each bagged a brace as Atlético Madrid strengthened their top four chances with a win over Alavés on Saturday evening.
Atlético thought he had taken the lead nine minutes later when Thomas Lemar hit Renan Lodi’s ball in the back, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside.
Their disappointment was short-lived however, when João Félix immediately jumped like a salmon to point home 1-0.
Alavés had a chance to equalize in the first half when Luis Rioja saw the goal, but Jan Oblak quickly lined up to clear it.
The visitors equalized just an hour later, when Édgar Méndez clashed with a powerful point past Oblak by Gonzalo Escalante.
But Atlético bounced back when Florian Lejeune lowered Matheus Cunha to the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Substitute Luis Suárez made no mistake from 12 yards 2-1.
Félix then collected points in his second game, breaking the rebound after Cunha was denied by the goalkeeper. And we still had time for Suárez to score his second goal to finish the tournament late.
Diego Simeone’s team is third in LaLiga and Manchester City will follow.
