Neymar joked that he was ‘drunk’ during Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-1 win over Lorient, in retaliation for his criticism of the French media.
PSG have endured a season of testing in this outing. Despite their determination to advance to another Ligue 1 title, they exited the Champions League in the 16th round, collapsing dramatically in the second leg of their match against Real Madrid.
The so-called ‘dream frontline’ of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi also failed to get into gear, as the big teams scolded several senior players after Real’s defeat.
Some media outlets have strongly criticized Neymar. Last month RMC Sport’s Daniel Riolo said the Brazilian would train “in a state of shock, almost intoxicated”.
Neymar responded well to this response on Sunday, scoring two goals in a 5-1 victory over Lorient at Parc des Princes.
After the game, he intends to make a direct comment to Riolo, posting a clip of his second strike on Instagram with captions saying: “I was ‘drunk’, that’s why it worked … as they say there.”
That punch moved Neymar to seven goals per season in 16 Ligue 1 games. He has signed two assistants.
