Phil Foden has admitted that Manchester City could have ‘killed’ Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final.

The England international played a key role for the Cityzens at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, scoring in the second half and helping his side through the Los Blancos defensive leg – especially in the first 20 minutes.

Manchester City went on to win the game 4-3, but speaking to BT Sport in full, Foden conceded they should have won by a landslide.

“For the fans who watched it was a very good game, a lot of goals. When we face a team that has won the Champions League many times if you let the ball in dangerous places they punish us. We know what to do there,” he said.

“It’s a good game and it ends sometimes. We started really well, we would have killed them, I got a chance and Riyad got it. We have to use our chances more.”

Foden and Riyad Mahrez both missed good chances in quick succession early in the second half, the first shot being cleared from Dani Carvajal’s line and the final game came off the post.

When Real Madrid hit the road back to where they had scored two or three goals, Foden’s teammate, Bernardo Silva, said:

“I think the first 20 minutes were really good, the way we were pressing, controlling the game, the way we created chances. For more than 90 minutes we felt we could have won with better goals. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take advantage of. At 4-3, we have a one-goal advantage.

“We still won the first game, it was only 90 minutes but it was a good game. Our fans should be proud of us, the team should be proud. We could have scored more goals but that’s the ball. They used the chances, we could have got more.”
