Thibaut Courtois is set to return to his old club Chelsea when Real Madrid head to Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night, and the Belgian midfielder is hoping his former fans will not welcome him.
Real Madrid will be hoping for revenge against the Blues with a 2020/21 Champions League semi-final, and the good form of Courtois will need to continue.
“I hope they don’t insult me, but you never know,” Courtois told Real Madrid’s website.
“I have prepared for anything to come and we will have to see how it goes.
“I hope it’s a pleasure to be back at Stamford Bridge. Now we’re the rivals. They’ll want to win and the same thing happens to me so I don’t expect the fans to applaud.”
When he left Chelsea for Los Merengues, Courtois openly admits it was a dream come true, and one he never imagined would happen to him.
“When I get to the training ground and see the Real Madrid badge, I sometimes think: I’m pinched! This is not a dream, is it?” he added.
“Even in my strange dream I never thought I would one day play for Real Madrid.
“That’s the good thing about football. You have to believe in yourself and that one day your dreams will come true.”
