Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has confirmed that Antoine Griezmann will remain at the club despite his loan spell with Barcelona this season.

After moving to Camp Nou in a controversial situation in 2019, Griezmann returned to Atletico last summer as part of a major effort from Barcelona to reduce their salary – Miralem Pjanic and Philippe Coutinho left at the same time and the club were forced to offer Lionel Messi as La Liga break allowed his new contract to be registered.

The terms of the Antoine Griezmann agreement were the first one-year loan, with a second season loan option, which could be initiated by any club, and a permanent transfer of 40 million euros by 2023.

“Antoine Griezmann will stay here, he will continue at Atletico Madrid next season,” Cerezo confirmed. “Money is not a problem if the plan is for them to stay together and the player wants to move on.”

Antoine Griezmann has started just 19 La Liga games this season, scoring three goals. But he surpassed that number in the UEFA Champions League, scoring four goals in nine games in the tournament.

During his stay, Atletico have already confirmed that Luis Suarez and Hector Herrera are both leaving the club this summer when their contracts expire.

Atletico Madrid played their last home game of the season on Sunday night, drew 1-1 with Sevilla, and will travel north to San Sebastian to play Real Sociedad in the final game of the season.
