The shirt worn by Diego Maradona when he scored the “Hand of God” goal cost more than £ 7million at auction, the highest price ever paid for a sports commemorative piece.

Maradona scored two of the most memorable goals in World Cup history knocking England out of the quarter-finals of the 1986 tournament in Mexico.

The late, former Argentina captain climbed over Peter Shilton and punched the first one at Azteca Stadium, officials failed to detect any violations.

Seconds later, he hit a series of England players with an impressive dribble on the road scoring an amazing goal on his own as Argentina won 2-1 and became world champions.

England midfielder Steve Hodge ended up wearing a shirt after exchanging Maradona – who died in November 2020 – following the match.

The shirt was borrowed from the National Football Museum in Manchester, but was auctioned off at Sotheby’s in London for a bidding period between April 20 and May 4, with speculators expecting it to raise around £ 4m.

However, the winning bid ended up being very high, as Sotheby’s confirmed on Wednesday that the shirt cost £ 7,142,500.

That eye-popping sum makes it the most expensive costume in history, with the 1928-30 street jersey and baseball icon Babe Ruth setting the previous record for 2019, worth £ 4.4m ($ 5.6m).
