Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool winning Premier League title now ‘unlikely’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that beating Manchester City in the Premier League on the final day of the season is ‘impossible’ following their win over Southampton on Tuesday.

After closing the gap on the leading Man City and reaching just one point with a win over St Mary’s, the Reds ensured the title race remained alive in the final round of games.

But to avoid Man City, Jurgen Klopp’s side must beat the Wolves and are hopeful that Pep Guardiola’s side will fail to score at home against Aston Villa.

“Yes, [winning the Premier League title] is unlikely that Man City will play at home against Aston Villa, who play only Thursday [Burnley],” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“But it’s football. I think the time when City became champions [in 2019] was because of the 11 millimeters. If anyone wants to be a champion we have to win first and then Aston Villa needs to get a point from City. It is possible, it is not possible but it is possible. That’s enough. ”

It also means that Liverpool’s chances of having an unprecedented quadruple are now slim. The Reds have already lifted the League Cup and FA Cup, as well as the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid in the 2018 rematch.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle at St Mary’s, captain Jordan Henderson revealed, “The aim was to take [the race to the final]. We knew it was going to be hard. Lots of changes. The boys were smart. They persevered to the end and received their reward.

“We’ve done that well all season, the boys who haven’t played the way they would like to take advantage of it. You need everyone in the Premier League season. We’re very used to it.

“We can all celebrate or rest at the end of the season after the Champions League final.”
