Luis Suarez will leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season after a two-year stint at Wanda Metropolitano, the LaLiga giants announced on Sunday.

Former Barcelona and Liverpool striker Suarez sparked last season which led to Diego Simeone’s team being honored with the LaLiga title.

That was his first campaign with Atletico after Suarez left Barcelona in doubt, and finished with 21 goals in 32 league games.

The 35-year-old has not done the same this season, although he has scored twice as many goals in Spain’s top flight, and his departure is expected.

Confirmation came when Atletico announced ahead of Sunday night’s game against Sevilla that it would be Suarez and Hector Herrera’s club final match, which in March they agreed to move to Houston Dynamo at the end of the season.

Atletico said in a statement on Twitter: “At the end of the match, Wanda Metropolitano will pay tribute to Luis Suarez and Hector Herrera, who bid farewell to the Red and White family today.”

Club president Enrique Cerezo has praised Suarez’s contribution to the team, as the Uruguayan veteran is about to end his two-year contract.

Cerezo said: “Luis Suarez is a brilliant player and a great man. He deserves everything in this club and will always have a very prominent place. In the museum and in any part of the stadium, Luis Suarez will have a very prominent role.”

Quoted by AS, Cerezo added: “We will have some good memories of him. He was a great player, he was one of the winners of the League.”

Suarez has recently been linked with a return to the shocking Barcelona, where he is ranked third in the club’s all-time leading scorers, following Lionel Messi and Cesar Rodriguez.
