‘No chance’ Jurgen Klopp risks Mohamed Salah’s fitness for Golden Boot battle with Son

Jurgen Klopp understands that Mohamed Salah would like to play on the final day of the Premier League season and win the Golden Boot, but neither Liverpool nor the player is willing to risk his strength.

Mohamed Salah injured his groin when he beat Liverpool in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last weekend and missed out on a midweek win at Southampton that kept the Reds in contention for the title.

There could be a double celebration for the Jurgen Klopp boys on Sunday, Man City with just one point left while Mohamed Salah (22 goals) lead Son Heung-min (21) on the scoring charts.

But with Liverpool also having a UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid to be considered in the final week, they have to make sure Mohamed Salah is ready to play.

The midfielder – who has been named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, and Declan Rice – is not just a trophy-winning injury problem.

Virgil van Dijk (knee) was also injured at Wembley, while Fabinho (muscle) came out of the last game against Aston Villa. Joe Gomez, who has a history of serious injuries, has suffered an ankle injury in Southampton.

“Joe has some good news,” Jurgen Klopp said ahead of Sunday’s game against the Wolves. “We want to get confirmation again, but the first one was like him and we thought after the game – we were lucky.

“It was the right knock, but nothing happened. It was the leg where he was injured, so I understand that everyone was worried; I was until I saw Joe’s face in the living room because most of the time we know better. About our body.

“The result of this [second] scan has not yet come, but we do not expect anything completely different. It is about making sure everything goes smoothly.

“And then from there, we go. If it’s okay, then it’s about pain: how can he deal with pain? We’ll see what Joe can do today or tomorrow, but I don’t know yet.

“With the other boys it looks good, what we’re going to do with them this weekend I don’t know.

“I understand 100% of the goal-scoring battle with Son Heung-min, but there is no chance of us risking it; Mo doesn’t want to risk it, no doubt about that.

“But it looks good the boys took it, we’ll see.

“My preferred solution would be for everyone to play over the weekend, for reasons of rhythm, things like this, or at least be on the bench and we could either take them out or not. But if not, we would be out of there. I can’t say 100 percent.”
