Manchester United are close to finalising an agreement with Barcelona over primary transfer target Frenkie de Jong. New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has identified De Jong as a key figure in his appointment last month, and talks have been open for several weeks.
Negotiations went well over the weekend and continued earlier this week, and both clubs have agreed on a broader agreement worth 80 million euros in total.
The deal is likely to include a guaranteed 65 million euros (£ 56m), as well as additional additions to transfer the amount requested by Barcelona. Barcelona have told United they would like the deal to be finalized on July 1 for further development, with sources from United confirming that they expect it to happen.
Another issue that has contributed to the finalization of the agreement is the payments to De Jong and his Barcelona agent, although that is yet to be resolved.
Manchester United are hopeful that De Jong will join the club in the coming days, and become a member of the tourist team on his pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia. The party started on July 8th.
Ten Hag’s presence at Old Trafford is believed to be a key factor in De Jong’s decision to take action.
Manchester United were keen to complete De Jong’s contract before moving on to other transfer goals, with Ajax winger Antony among the priorities of the summer. The club is also considering signing a new component of the center – both Lisandro Martinez and Pau Torres on their radar.
The contract has also been offered to former captain Christian Eriksen, with United hoping the player will agree to join him after his contract expires with Brentford.
