Paris Saint-Germain have informed Mauricio Pochettino that he will be relieved of his duties as head coach.
The Argentine manager has long welcomed his decision after a disappointing season in the French capital, and the appointment of PSG Luis Campos as a sporting director has hastened their decision to part ways with Pochettino.
PSG were planning to fire Pochettino this summer. Performance on the pitch was declining and it was becoming increasingly clear that he was not someone who could make their top three players Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi shoot at all cylinders.
Pochettino replaced Thomas Tuchel at the Parc des Princes in January 2021 with PSG faltering in defending their Ligue 1 title. Les Parisiens will lose to Lille at home but qualify for the Champions League semi-finals.
PSG’s 2021/22 season was dominated by Messi’s hesitant arrival, their Champions League fell to Real Madrid and the future of Mbappe, who opted to sign a new contract in May.
With Pochettino about to leave, PSG’s focus will shift from finding a replacement. Zinedine Zidane has long been regarded as a worthy man by club officials, although his adviser recently dismissed reports suggesting that the former player is close to a deal to take over.
Nice manager Christophe Galtier, who worked under Campos in Nice, is also honored, as Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim. Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was targeted earlier this year but has confirmed his commitment to Spurs.
