Ousmane Dembele intends to stay at Barcelona and dismissed the Chelsea transfer links as “just rumours” – in an impromptu interview while waiting at traffic lights.
Barcelona paid the first 105 million euros to sign Borussia Dortmund Dembele in 2017, but his five-year contract expires at the end of June.
Bayern Munich and Chelsea are reportedly keen on winning the World Cup, who were publicly told to leave Barca by the club during the January transfer window after breach of contract.
However, with the exception of a move that has not been seen since the end of January, Dembele was reunited with Xavi’s team and regained his form.
The 25-year-old finished the season with more assistants (13) and expected assistants (9.2) than any other player in LaLiga, recording his best in both metrics in one of the five major European leagues.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reiterated his desire to keep Dembele at the club, and Blaugrana’s boss appears to have met his dream.
Trapped in a traffic jam, Dembele was questioned by a fan of the next car, and photos of the exchange were posted on social media.
Asked if he would stay at the club, the defender replied “yes”.
When pressured by Chelsea links, Dembele called the speculation “just a rumor” and added that he “felt good in Barcelona”.
The Frenchman’s words will strengthen Barcelona as Xavi looks to improve on his team lying in second place in the upcoming 2022-23 campaign.
