Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic has described the prospect of signing Cristiano Ronaldo as “the biggest rumour” in the club’s history.
The Manchester United forward has been linked with a number of clubs since it emerged he is unhappy at Old Trafford, with Dortmund among the latest to be linked.
Their Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich mooted the idea of signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner last month, while Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Sporting CP have also been mooted as possible next destinations for Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is said to be eager to play Champions League football, something United cannot offer after a dismal sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Dortmund are also in need of a striker after losing Sebastien Haller, who underwent surgery and faces chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a malignant testicular tumor shortly after his arrival from Ajax.
However, Dortmund have questioned the idea of signing Ronaldo, 37, who was United’s top scorer last season with 24 goals.
Terzic told German broadcaster Sky on Saturday: “It’s clear that Cristiano Ronaldo is the biggest rumor of all time at BVB. We commented on that and I don’t comment on rumours.”
Still, Terzic said he is a fan of Ronaldo, explaining: “He is one of the best footballers I have ever seen play live.”
Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke on Friday poured cold water on growing rumors that he is looking to bring Ronaldo to the club, although he, like Terzic, claims to be a big fan of the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Borussia Dortmund? That’s very glamorous at first glance. He’s one of the greatest players the world has ever seen,” Watzke said.
“The only catch is that there is no contact at all between the parties involved and certainly no transfer.
