Luka Modric has labelled Real Madrid’s sale of midfield star Casemiro to Manchester United this summer as a ‘shame’.
The pair have been part of a triumphant Madrid side over the past decade as they have combined to win five UEFA Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles and three FIFA Club World Cups at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Manchester United confirmed on Friday that they have reached an agreement to sign the Brazilian midfielder, with the club to pay €60m (£51m) plus a further €10m for his services.
In an interview with journalists after Real Madrid’s emphatic 4:1 win over Celta Vigo, Modric expressed his disappointment at the loss of Casemiro: “The thing with Casemiro is a shame, we made history with him, he was a vital piece for us and we will miss him a lot to be missed, both as a player and as a person.
“This is part of football, I’m sad to see him go, but we have to go on without him and every player has to give even more in terms of the things he’s done.”
Despite not having Casemiro by his side on Saturday, Modric was in inspired form for Los Blancos, scoring a wonderful goal in the win. After the game manager Carlo Ancelotti described Modric as “immortal”: “He is immortal. He is always ready, he always plays very well. His goal changed the game, until then it was a close and competitive game.”
