Steven Gerrard was dismissed by Aston Villa following defeat to Fulham, with the club languishing above the relegation zone.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is adamant Steven Gerrard will return to management but hopes he takes some time away from football after being axed by Aston Villa.
Gerrard was sacked following Villa’s defeat by Fulham on Thursday, which left the club above the Premier League relegation zone on goals scored only, having recorded just two wins in the opening 11 games of the campaign.
Previously tipped by many as Klopp’s eventual successor at Anfield, Gerrard now has to rebuild his reputation after a disappointing spell at Villa, which came after success in Scotland with Rangers.
Klopp does not expect that to be a problem for the former Liverpool captain, although he hopes he does not rush into the role.
“I’m very confident he’ll come back from it. We’ve developed a close relationship with the academy during my seven years at Liverpool,” he told a press conference ahead of the match against Nottingham Forest on Friday.
“I’ve always watched him, we had a bit of a chat this morning but nothing too deep, it wasn’t a long chat. I can imagine it’s a disappointment for him with the ambitions he had and the things he wanted to achieve with Aston. Vila, it’s obviously not good.
“We don’t have to worry, he’s known the game long enough, it’s life, we all get knocks, it’s all about how we react. He’s always bounced back and he’ll definitely bounce back.”
“Many great managers have had to leave their previous clubs for various reasons. Quite often they will turn up somewhere else and learn from that situation.”
“He’ll be back at 100 percent, but I hope he’ll take some time for himself because he’s been working pretty much all the time since he retired, so maybe he’ll use that to recharge a bit now.” .”
