Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about the team and the 2022 World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni spoke at Monday’s press conference about the team. Lionel Messi also spoke at the press conference, commenting on the team and its condition.

Scaloni talked about the starting eleven. He said it would be one of Alejandro Papu Gómez or Alexis Mac Allister to start in midfield in place of Gio Lo Celso. Here is what he had to say:

“The team is already confirmed. I told the players today. I will not change it and we are not changing the system either. You’ll see tomorrow. There won’t be any big changes.”

“A player like Joaquín, who left, can play inside and outside, as a striker or a playmaker, and Ángel gives us that. In the case of Nicolas Gonzalez, he played most of the time on the left side and Thiago can give us that with different qualities.

“That was an idea we had. There were other options, but there was no time to wait. We are convinced.”

As for Enzo Fernandez in the team:

“Enzo Fernández is very good. Fortunately, 26 players were able to change and have everyone available in case a change needed to be made. Enzo is a player who, in addition to what can be seen at Benfica, we already saw his potential in the national team last year.”

About the World Cup:

“Big favorites never win the World Cup. I think a lot of great nations, great teams, at least eight of them can win this World Cup. The majority are Europeans. This has happened in recent years. I think the South American teams couldn’t make it to the finals, we didn’t even make it in 2014 and Argentina might have done a bit better. The rest are just details. And I think this World Cup will be the same. The details make the champions and not necessarily the team that plays the best.

“Ecuador won very well yesterday. It is a national team at a very high level. I said the same thing every time I played. The rest will have a hard time and I’m not surprised they won. This is not to say that Qatar is a bad team. England is a contender, but I’m not saying the Arab teams are a step below. You have to prove that you are better, there is an emotional aspect to the game, the important thing is to move on rather than how. Logically, we have our way of playing and we will try not to change it.”
