Neymar has been ruled out of Brazil’s game against Switzerland due to an ankle injury.

The striker was clearly struggling after his nation’s opening match against Serbia.

Brazilian doctor Rodrigo Lasmar has now confirmed that Neymar and Danilo will miss Monday’s World Cup second leg against Switzerland.

He said: “Neymar and Danilo started treatment yesterday (Thursday) immediately after our game. They were assessed again this morning (Friday) and as we have already progressed in yesterday’s interview, through today’s physical assessment we thought it was important to do an imaging test, an MRI to have more data on the development of both players. .

“The scans showed an injury to the lateral ligament in Neymar’s right ankle along with a little swelling of the bone. And an injury to the medial ligament in Danilo’s left ankle. The players remain under treatment. It is very important that we are very calm, peaceful, this assessment will take place daily so that we have information and based on that they made the best decisions.

“We can already say that we will not have these two players for our next game, but they remain in treatment with our aim to try and recover in time for this competition.”

Lasmar confirmed after the game that Neymar had sprained his ankle, although manager Tite said he believed the 30-year-old would play again in Qatar.

The Brazilian doctor said: “Neymar has sprained his right ankle. We started treatment immediately, but we have to wait 24 hours for a better assessment.

“We have nothing else planned. Now we have to wait and we cannot make any premature comments.”

Tite later added: “We are confident that Neymar will continue to play, that he will continue to play at the World Cup.”
