Chelsea are in negotiations with Benfica over the signing of highly-coveted midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano
Fernandez has seen his value skyrocket after a sensational World Cup campaign where he was instrumental in Argentina lifting the title while also winning the tournament’s best young player award.
The 21-year-old’s rise to prominence has also attracted the attention of a number of European giants who are ready to meet Benfica’s €120m valuation.
Chelsea appear to have jumped the queue as Romano reports that Fernandez has given the green light to his move to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are now trying to reach an agreement with the Portuguese giants, although they are only willing to pay a huge sum in installments rather than exercise the Argentine’s release clause.
Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid have been credited with an interest in Fernandez, but none have made any formal bids.
The Blues are among the active players in the transfer market as Todd Boehly looks to build one of the best teams in Europe.
Christopher Nkunku is set to move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, while the west London club recently completed the signing of David Datro Fofana. A deal is also looming for Brazilian prodigy Andrey Santos.
In addition, Chelsea are the frontrunners to sign Monaco centre-back Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid, meaning they are likely to start a spending spree.
Fernandez will be a much-needed addition to the squad, given the uncertain futures of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho – who are out of contract next summer.
