Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez has done his best to cool the speculation surrounding his future as he continues to be linked with Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
The 21-year-old, who only joined Benfica in the summer from boyhood club River Plate, was named young player of the tournament at the recent 2022 World Cup after starring for Argentina, fueling transfer talk.
A host of European giants were already sniffing around for his signature ahead of the World Cup, and reports have since emerged that his €120m release clause could come into play as early as January.
It’s been 12 months for Fernandez, who admits he’s doing his best to keep his eyes out of the headlines.
“I don’t know anything about [the transfer],” he told fans in his homeland. “It’s up to my agent, I don’t want to get involved. I’m focused on Benfica, we have an important match in a few days.”
Fernandez moved to Benfica for an initial fee of €10 million and continued his good form in Portugal with three goals and five assists in 24 games before the World Cup break.
Argentina’s senior international debut came as recently as September 2022 and Fernandez traveled to the World Cup as a squad player, coming off the bench for the first two games before being handed a starting spot for the final group game.
Fernandez played every minute of the knockout stages as Argentina lifted the trophy, giving scouts around the world plenty of opportunities to compile reports.
