Liverpool flirted with a potential quadruple last season, resulting in a fatigue-inducing 63-match campaign.
Jurgen Klopp pointed to Liverpool’s hectic schedule over the past 12 months as a reason for his side’s struggles this season.
Liverpool played 63 games in the 2021-22 season as they enjoyed great success in the Champions League, EFL Cup and FA Cup and have since struggled with a number of injuries.
Currently seventh in the Premier League table with eight wins from 17 games, the Reds are seven points off the top four and in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time since finishing eighth in 2015-16. season.
Klopp told the media on Friday that many of Liverpool’s problems could be attributed to “bad luck”.
“Anyone know how the last 63 game season might affect this season?” he said. “I don’t think anyone could know. It had to be—we can tell right now.”
“We had a holiday, nothing much, played here and all the lads looked good. Then it started with Diogo [Jota] coming back from international duty and getting injured and then boom, boom, boom.
“Luis [Diaz] twice, Darwin [Nunez] suspended and now injured. Earlier in the season there were no midfielders available so we brought in Arthur [Melo] and then he got injured. There’s a lot of bad luck.
He added: “We were in a super positive mood, we could have won everything and then suddenly we don’t win everything. Just because we’re Liverpool doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to have problems.”
“When you’re Liverpool and the distance to the UEFA Champions League is getting closer, you feel like you’re at the bottom of the table – but thank God we’re not. We’ve got a lot of games and players to come back.”
Liverpool will look to start their march up the table away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
