Manchester City have finalised the signing of Argentine midfielder Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield.
Early in the transfer window, City fought off competition to seal a deal for the 20-year-old, who was also being chased by Benfica, Newcastle and Wolverhampton Wanderers, among others.
City are understood to have triggered Perrone’s release clause, which was around $9m (£7.5m).
The defensive midfielder has put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal at the Etihad Stadium and follows compatriot Julian Alvarez in moving to the blue half of Manchester this season.
Perrone will return to South America for the under-20 championships currently taking place in Colombia before heading back to the Etihad where he is expected to train with Pep Guardiola’s first team for the rest of the campaign.
By moving to City, Perrone, who will make his senior debut for Velez in March 2022, completes a whirlwind 12 months.
Perrone played 33 games for the Argentine team, scoring three goals and two assists.
