With three goals conceded this season through his own direct errors, Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is past his prime for Graeme Souness.
Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is “past his sell-by date”, with Graeme Souness indicating he was at fault for their 2-0 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday.
Antonio Conte’s side lost 2023 as goals from Emi Buendia and Douglas Luiz secured victory for Unai Emery’s visitors in north London.
Lloris endured a horror show between the posts and spilled the ball to allow Villa the opener before being beaten from close range for their second.
His errors have now led to four Premier League goals since the start of last season, with just three this term, and Souness feels he is now a problem.
“I’m not a big fan of Hugo Lloris,” the former Liverpool midfielder told Sky Sports as a pundit. “I’ve been saying this for a long time.
“Since the start of last season, he has made four mistakes leading to goals, the most of any goalkeeper in the league. For me, he is past his sell-by date.”
Spurs’ latest lackluster performance means they have conceded at least twice in seven consecutive league games for the first time since 1988.
Their goalkeeping struggles around the World Cup campaign, where he guided France to a second successive final, have not helped Conte and his team this term.
He has conceded 3.7 more goals than his expected targets this season, with only Southampton’s Gavin Bazunu (7.9) and Bournemouth’s Mark Travers (6.2) doing worse.
In total, Tottenham have conceded five goals from own errors as a team this term, two more than any other Premier League team.
