Two teams hoping to salvage a lost domestic campaign with cup silverware are set to do battle as Juventus host Inter Milan at the Allianz Stadium in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semifinal.
The two clubs have long been out of Serie A title contention for various reasons, and while both are still alive in European competition, this is their last chance on home hardware this season.
Juventus are currently out of the European places in Italy’s top flight due to a 15-point penalty deduction, but good form has seen them shoot back up the table and start to challenge for a place in the top seven. Moreover, they have already knocked out two Serie A teams in this cup competition, beating Monza and Lazio by one goal in the earlier rounds of the Coppa Italia.
Inter, meanwhile, are in freefall, having not won three league games in a row and four of their last five. They can’t seem to buy a goal at the moment and with a crucial Champions League meeting with Benfica ahead of them, they know they need to find their form by next week.
