After qualifying for the 2022 World Championships for the first time in 37 years, Canada’s men’s national team hopes to end another long drought by claiming its first silverware in 23 years.
Canada faces Panama in the semi-final stage of the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League on Thursday, knowing that a win in Las Vegas would advance the team to Sunday’s final and a chance to claim its first trophy since the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
It’s a chance for Canada to show that their unexpected first place in North American World Cup qualifying was no fluke and that they are here to stay as a powerhouse in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Football) region.
The 47th-ranked Canadians are heavy favorites against a 58th-ranked Panama team that failed to qualify for the World Cup and had to come from behind to beat Nicaragua at home in a friendly on Saturday. Both Canada and Panama finished first in their Nations League group to reach this stage.
The two sides split their World Cup qualifiers, with Canada beating Panama 4–1 in October 2021 before losing 1–0 in Panama with qualification already assured.
