The USMNT have a strong claim to having the best men’s soccer national team in North America, but Canada will challenge that standing in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League final on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The American side are the reigning Nations League and Gold Cup champions (both won in 2021) and were the only team from the region to advance to the 2022 World Cup knockout stages. A 3-0 defeat of Mexico in Thursday’s semi-final only strengthened their position as the region’s heavyweights.
However, Canada will feel they have what it takes to topple the USA from their perch, having surprisingly topped North American World Cup qualifiers and winning and drawing the Americans in their last two head-to-head matches.
Generational talents like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David have fueled Canada’s rise – both scoring in Thursday’s semi-final against Panama – and after reaching their first World Cup in 37 years, the nation is looking to end a 23-year trophy drought and show its men’s team is no longer a drag.
Canada’s all-time record against the Americans is relatively close (16 US wins, 10 Canadian wins and 12 draws), especially when it comes to official competitions such as the Nations League (9 US wins, 8 Canadian wins and five draws). They will meet for the first time in the final on Sunday.
And there might not be a better time for Canada to make history with the U.S. missing two key players. Midfielder Weston McKennie and right-back Sergino Dest are suspended for the red cards they each received against Mexico.
