Lionel Messi’s decision to complete a free transfer to Inter Miami will extend his career until at least 2025.

The Argentina international will formally complete his departure from Paris Saint-Germain on June 30, with his contract in Florida effective immediately.

Messi is rumored to have turned down a lucrative offer to join Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, with Barcelona not making a formal offer and MLS being his next stage.

The 35-year-old continues to be one of the highest-paid players in world football, despite his advancing years, as he prepares to play for club and country.

Lionel Messi’s contract, salary at Inter Miami

Due to the structure of the MLS season, running through the summer months in contrast to the majority of European campaigns, Messi has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract in Miami.

That will bring him up to the end of 2025, as opposed to July 2025, with an option to extend for another 12 months if he wants to play in the 2026 World Cup, hosted across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Details over Messi’s prospective contract in Miami have been reported with differing final figures due to MLS rules on salary caps and player rosters.

As per reports from the Miami Herald, Messi’s deal will be worth $125m-150m/£100m-£120m in total, which breaks down at around $4.1m$5m/£3.3m/£4m per month.

Lionel Messi on football’s top salary list

If the numbers surrounding Messi’s contract are accurate, even at the higher end of the scale, he will see a reduction from his PSG wages.

He will stay inside the top five on the highest earners list, but his new deal is dwarfed by the sums being raked in by Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in Saudi Arabia.
