The Lionel Messi era at Inter Miami got off to a flying start Friday evening, as the Argentina legend scored a late winner to see the south Florida side picked up a win against Cruz Azul on the opening night of Leagues Cup play.
Messi and Sergio Busquets started the game from the bench and their absence was not felt in the opening 45 minutes as Miami took the lead at the break.
While Cruz Azul should have taken a healthy lead after an early onslaught, their wastefulness in front of goal was punished by Roberto Taylor’s strike just before the break.
Shortly after the restart, the DRV Pink faithful finally got what they came for as Messi and Busquets joined the action from the bench.
However, the celebrations were cut short as Uriel Antuna pulled Cruz Azul level with a rocket just past the hour mark.
As if the script couldn’t have been scripted more perfectly, Messi responded when it mattered most, tapping in a free-kick deep into stoppage time before firing the ball into the net for the winner.
