David de Gea has confirmed he will leave Manchester United this summer after failing to agree terms on a new contract.

The goalkeeper’s previous contract expired this summer and he was offered the chance to re-sign on significantly reduced terms, but De Gea has now confirmed he will leave Old Trafford instead.

“Just wanted to send this goodbye message to all the Manchester United fans,” he tweeted.

“I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love over the last 12 years. We have achieved so much since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. Every time I put on this shirt I was incredibly proud.” he said. to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world, was an honor that only a few lucky footballers received.

“It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think that when I left Madrid as a little boy, we would achieve what we did together.”

“Now is the right time to take on a new challenge, to establish myself again in a new environment.

“Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester shaped me and it will never leave me.”

De Gea is leaving United after 12 years at Old Trafford, which saw him make 545 appearances in all competitions and eight trophies, including the 2012/13 Premier League title.

While United hoped to keep hold of De Gea, club officials have long sought a new high-profile goalkeeper and are close to completing a deal for Inter’s Andre Onana.
