Maguire’s future at Old Trafford is in doubt.

Harry Maguire has confirmed he is no longer Manchester United captain after meeting with manager Erik ten Hague.

It was reported earlier this month that the Ten Hag are ready to remove Maguire from the role after the England defender’s limited appearances under the Dutchman last season.

The centre-back has made just eight Premier League starts, leading to constant speculation about his future at Old Trafford.

Maguire wrote on Twitter: “Following discussions with the manager today he has informed me that he is changing captain.

“He outlined his reasons and although I am personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my best every time I pull on the shirt.

“So I wanted to say a big thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their great support when I had the armband on.

“From the day I took up the role three and a half years ago, it has been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career so far.

“It’s one of the biggest honors in club football. I’ve done everything I can to help United be successful – on and off the pitch.

“I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for giving me the responsibility in the first place and I wish whoever takes it on now the best of luck and my full support. Harry.”

In Maguire’s absence last season, Bruno Fernandes was most often named captain and the Portuguese midfielder is expected to be given a permanent role.

Maguire has made over 170 appearances for United since signing for £80m from Leicester in 2019.

The English regular has been linked with a move to West Ham in recent days.
