France face off against Ukraine at Cluj Arena in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship on Sunday (July 2).
France have automatically qualified for the 2024 Olympic men’s football tournament as hosts, but are aiming for a second UEFA Under-21 title. They won the championship in 1988 and finished second in 2002.
France had a flawless run in the group stage, winning all three matches, against Italy 2-1, Norway 1-0 and Switzerland 4-1. In the group stage of the tournament, they topped Group D with nine points – the second team behind England – to take full points. France and Ukraine last met in a 2022 Euro U21 qualifier, which ended 3-3.
Ukraine, meanwhile, is making its fourth appearance and is running an impressive campaign. They finished second in Group B with seven points, level with table toppers Spain. They beat Croatia 2-0, Romania 1-0 and drew with Spain 2-2. Ukraine are aiming to win their first European Under-21 Championship.
The Young Men came close in 2006 when they reached the final but lost to the Netherlands. According to Ukrainian manager Ruslan Rotan, motivation could be the determining factor in the clash.
“At this stage, unlike us, France has little to play for. We are fighting to go to the games, they are already there,” he says.
