Transfer news: Is Harry Kane leaving Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham fans face another summer of anxiety over the future of striker Harry Kane, with the England captain potentially set to leave the club ahead of the 2023/24 season.

With one season remaining on his contract at Tottenham, the Spurs legend has been linked with a potential move ahead of the new campaign, with incoming manager Ange Postecoglou confirming talks with Kane about his plans at the club.

Kane’s potential departure is nothing new to the Spurs faithful as their No.10 infamously blocked a move to Manchester City in 2021, followed by links to Manchester United in the summer of 2022.

However, it looks like the mood will be different in 2023, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich reportedly leading the hunt for the 29-year-old as they look to win major silverware in the coming years.

Is Harry Kane leaving Tottenham?

When Kane returned to pre-season training at Tottenham, it looked like his future would go one of two ways: staying at Spurs or heading to Bayern. However, things may have changed.

The latest reports in England suggest that Spurs majority owner Joe Lewis has told club chairman Daniel Levy that he cannot let Kane leave for nothing when his contract expires next year. That means Spurs have to convince him to sign a new deal or sell him now.

Postecoglou and Levy have outlined their desire to keep Kane at the club as he enters the final year of his contract. Levy said at the end of the 2022/23 season that he was confident Kane could achieve his trophy goals at Tottenham, despite years of frustration.

“He can absolutely win the trophy at Spurs, but you know, being a legend is also important,” he said.

“The fact that he is Tottenham’s top goalscorer makes history. I hope one day Harry Kane will be outside our stadium.”

Postecoglou was equally upbeat about the club’s prospects of keeping Kane with the Australian in the hope of convincing them of real change under his management. He was also deeply unimpressed by a German journalist who attended Spurs’ pre-season media conference wearing a Bayern shirt emblazoned with Kane’s name and number.

According to reports in the Daily Telegraph, Postecoglou and Levy are ready to offer Kane a new £400,000 ($517,000)-a-week contract to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future, but Levy is being pragmatic about the situation.

The Spurs boss is plotting a possible exit with Sky Sports confirming reports of a meeting between Levy and Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen in London on July 14.

The situation appears to be coming to a head, with both sides wanting a firm decision before the start of the season, and Telegraph reporter Jason Burt has updated that Bayern have set a midnight deadline of August 4 for Spurs to agree or back out of sale talks.

Sky Sports Germany transfer guru Florian Plettenberg also reports that Bayern have tabled an offer in excess of €100m to try and secure a deal, with a response from Spurs expected imminently.
