Virgil van Dijk has been appointed Liverpool captain following the departure of Jordan Henderson, the Premier League club have announced.

The 32-year-old, who joined Anfield from Southampton in 2018 and has made 222 appearances, also fills the role at international level for the Netherlands.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been confirmed as vice-captain after James Milner left for Brighton in the summer.

Henderson and Milner depart as part of the squad’s midfield overhaul as Jurgen Klopp looks to rebuild after a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

It meant the club failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

“Last year was a very disappointing year,” Van Dijk told the club’s website. “Actually, it wasn’t a bad run. Obviously, in the end, we didn’t achieve anything we hoped for, and that was a big disappointment.”

Players who were part of Klopp’s 2020 title-winning squad also saw the departure of Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was released after an injury-hit Reds career.

Brighton midfielder World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister was signed in their place, along with Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.

“Obviously it’s been quite an interesting summer with players obviously leaving and new players coming in, this little transition that’s going on,” Van Dijk added.

“We have to be a bit patient as well, but we want to be there and we want to show what we are capable of because we have a fantastic group of players, staff, fans, the stadium, we shouldn’t even discuss that.”
