MLS fans will have to wait a little longer for Lionel Messi’s first regular season game with Inter Miami CF.
Lionel Messi was extraordinary as Inter Miami’s new star. After four matches, the legend scored seven goals and led his team to the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Their next opponent is Charlotte FC and thanks to the great performances of other players such as Sergio Busquets or Jordi Alba, Inter Miami are favorites to win the tournament.
However, MLS is a different story as Inter Miami is still one of the worst teams in the competition. Now, Lionel Messi’s debut has been postponed just before the final drive for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.
When will Lionel Messi make his debut in the MLS?
Lionel Messi’s MLS debut was scheduled for August 20 against Charlotte FC, the same team he will face in the League Cup quarterfinals. However, Inter Miami’s great performances in this tournament only changed the plans.
“Major League Soccer announced today that Inter Miami CF’s MLS match against Charlotte FC originally scheduled for Sunday, August 20 at DRV PNK Stadium has been postponed to a later date to be announced.”
With Inter Miami and Charlotte FC both advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2023 League Cup, one of these teams will inevitably play in the final or third-place match at the tournament on August 19.
This is why it is impossible to play an MLS game. A possible date for Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami league debut could be August 26 against the New York Red Bulls. Before that, Messi could play in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup in Cincinnati on August 23.
