Nigeria host Sao Tome and Principe on Sunday (September 10) at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in the final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The hosts enjoyed a largely solid qualifying campaign and qualified for a third successive AFCON finals. Nigeria beat Sierra Leone 3-2 in their last game and squandered a two-goal lead in the second half before Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho scored a late goal to secure all three points. Nigeria top the qualifying Group A with 12 points from five matches.
Meanwhile, São Tomé and Príncipe endured another miserable AFCON qualifying campaign as they once again missed out on the finals. They lost 1-0 to Guinea-Bissau last time out, falling behind soon after the restart and unable to find a way back.
