On the back of mixed results in their last matches, France and Scotland meet in an international friendly on Tuesday. While France secured a 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Friday, Scotland beat Spain 2-0 in controversial circumstances on Thursday.
Kylian Mbappe’s brilliant brace proved to be just enough for France to beat the Netherlands in the group stages of Euro 2024 qualification. Goals from Mbappe in the seventh and 53rd minutes of the game fired Les Bleus into the lead.
Quilindschy Hartman pulled one back for the Dutch in the 83rd minute but it proved to be little more than a consolation for them as the game ended 2-1 to Didier Deschamps’ men.
Thanks to this win, France have now punched their ticket to Euro 2024. Having won all six of their group matches so far in Group B, they have secured a top two spot.
Meanwhile, Scotland lost 2-0 to Spain to earn a spot for their perfect record in Euro qualifying. He feels, quite rightly, aggrieved by the controversial VAR call that led to Scott McTominay’s free-kick being disallowed for offside.
Scotland would have believed they were well on their way to booking a place at the Euro 2024 finals after seeing the net go up. However, referee Serdar Gozubuyuk ruled that Jack Hendry, who was in an offside position, had obstructed Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon and the goal was disallowed.
Alvaro Morata and debutant Oihan Sancet then scored for Spain to spoil Scotland’s night.
The Tartan Army will be determined to produce a positive performance against the Frenchman to sign off this international break on a livelier note.
