The Premier League’s underdogs were at their best at Kenilworth Road on Sunday.
A truly awful mistake by Darwin Nunez looked to spell doom for Liverpool as Tahith Chong’s goal 10 minutes from time promised to be their undoing.
Yet Luis Diaz, in his first appearance since kidnapping his father back home in Colombia, came off the bench to rescue the Reds with an emotional moment to save a point from an otherwise inevitable fate in more than 90 minutes of action.
Liverpool repeatedly pounded Luton Town from start to finish but goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski repeatedly turned them away. Nunez then produced one of his signature mistakes with 15 minutes to go and it felt as if it could be their undoing.
That narrative seemingly came true when Luton substitute Tahith Chong came off the bench to put the visitors in front with a furious counter-attack, punishing Miss Nunez and confirming Kaminski’s exceptional performance in net.
Yet Liverpool, who have always struggled with adversity this season, were once again on the mend as Diaz was on hand in the 96th minute to guide the Reds back level. While they will be disappointed to drop the points against the relegation contenders, they will no doubt take a big emotional lift from Diaz’s goal as the Colombian displayed his ‘free my father’ message in celebration.
