Inter Miami CF is set to sign legendary Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez for the 2024 MLS season, according to multiple reports from reputable journalists in South America.
Suárez would reportedly complete the year with Brazil’s Grêmio in Serie A before linking up with Lionel Messi in the Herons’ attack. They memorably played together at FC Barcelona in 2010, making up two-thirds of the vaunted ‘MSN’ forward line alongside Brazilian star Neymar.
In addition to Messi, Inter Miami’s squad next year also includes former Barca teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. All three players arrived during their transformative summer 2023 transfer window.
Suárez has long been linked with a move to Miami and that speculation only increased after Messi officially signed in July. Adding fuel to the fire, head coach Tata Martino left open the possibility that Suárez could join. And when the club declined the contract option of striker Josef Martínez, he carved out a place in the No.9 role alongside Leonardo Campana.
In addition to Barca, Suárez’s star-studded resume includes stints at esteemed European clubs Ajax, Liverpool and Atlético Madrid. At club level, he scored over 450 goals and won over 20 trophies. Suárez, who turns 37 in January, has 10g/10a in 26 games for Grêmio as he is third in the ongoing Brazilian Serie A campaign.
On the international stage, Suárez is Uruguay’s top scorer with 68 goals in 137 games. He played in four World Cups and was part of the La Celeste team that won the Copa América 2011. He memorably formed a lethal partnership with Edinson Cavani, who now plays for Argentina’s Boca Juniors.
Inter Miami have already entered 2024 in earnest, building on their historic League Cup title and Messi winning his world-record eighth Ballon d’Or. Add Suárez to the mix and the global spotlight will only increase for the south Florida-based club, which is set to debut in Concacaf Champions Cup action next February.
